Ferret playground
If you are lucky enough to have little ferret buddies in your home, you undoubtedly know how playful and mischievous they can be. Since they are always running around and moving about, it just becomes second nature to always try to keep finding new toys for them. Making a ferret play area could be the ultimate solution for all the toys that accumulate and an opportunity to add even more to the collection!
The size of your ferret playground will vary to match the amount of space you are willing to allocate for your ferret friends.
Small ferret play boxes
This type of playground is great if you have very little space to spare and want to be able to put it away at the end of the day. For this, use a large box, it could be a plastic container or a cardboard box, and fill it with small ferret toys on different sides.
Add a couple of fabric pieces like socks or old towels in one area. You could also dedicate a small section and make it a dig box within the larger box. The main goal is to make sure that even though there might not be a lot of space, the ferrets still have toys that let them play in different ways.
Playhouse cages
If you already have a large cage or multiple cages for your ferrets, this will be the best choice for you. The process is to simply convert the existing cage to a playhouse. In addition to the normal toys you could add to the cage, here are some other things you could do to take your ferret playground to the next level:
- Add a tunnel system that goes out of the ferret cage and loops around to end back at the cage. If you are using multiple cages you could even use the tunnel to connect the cages to each other.
- Hang a hammock or sleep pouch from the top. This can be used for playing but also as a space to sleep when they are tired.
Ferret playroom
If you have a whole room that you can dedicate to these fun pets, there is barely any limits to what you can create. Fill it up with all the toys you already have and dedicate spaces for different activities.
If you are looking to add to the toy collection, consider browsing cat toys on Amazon as some of them are like ferret treasure. What is most important is to make sure to use up space vertically as well, so that all the space is used up efficiently.
Things that could use the vertical space:
- Tunnel systems– Since there is much more space in these playrooms, there are much more options of what could be done with the ferret tunnels: create loops, diversions and even pocket spaces that could be used as resting spots in between the wiggling.
- Platforms– Install these at different heights that could work as several “steps” that can be climbed. Feel free to connect these platforms using mini ladders, slides, or even ropes.
Since you have much more space in this option, dedicate different boxes or areas for different types of playing. To do this you could take a couple large boxes and fill each of those with different materials. Fill one of the boxes with rice or dried beans to create a dig box and put small toys inside that the ferrets can burrow to. Fill another one with plastic balls to make a ball pit.
It can also be helpful to dedicate a specific space for lounging since these little buddies will certainly get tired at some point and might just want a nap. Use pillows and blankets or old sheets along with (DIY) hammocks and sleep pouches to make it extra cozy.
At the end of the day, there are not many limitations as to what you can add to your DIY ferret playground, but just make sure that everything you are setting up is safe for them to use and can be cleaned and maintained regularly. Then sit back and enjoy the show.
